Abstract
This study puts in question the important and contradictory role that Jean
Akassou Djamba played in the political, socio-cultural, and local, economic, regional and national dynamics. First of all, what are the factors that led to his emergence as an actor in the political history of Cameroon in general and that of the North of Cameroon in particular and what justifies his contradictory attitude? To answer this question, we have used two main sources: written documents (books, thesis and archives) and oral sources. The confrontation, the verification of information from different sources, and the critical interpretation of oral and written information led us to the following findings. Born in 1921 in a Massa family in Yagoua, Jean Akassou Djamba had a difficult childhood which frustrated him. He was torn between customary and Western values. Thanks to the combination of three important factors (Western education, support from the colonial and traditional authorities and a game of political interests with Ahmadou Ahidjo), Jean Akassou Djamba became a political elite. This article sheds light on his social origins and the impact of his actions, sometimes controversial, on the local, regional and national dynamics.
Key words: Political path, kirdi elite, history actor, political dynamics, Northern Cameroon, Cameroon.
