Abstract
According to several critics, John Rawls's (1921-2002) theory of justice is ideological in so far as it fails to include the dimension of work in the formulation of the principles of justice. Rawls replies, among other things, that workplace democracy remains compatible with the institutions of a property-owning democracy: the aim is to limit the promotion of natural gifts so as to improve, first of all, the condition of the least advantaged. This article analyses Rawls's model of social justice from the standpoint of work and merit. The guiding questions are the following: what meaning should be given to “work”, and does the contemporary emphasis on merit cause our societies to lose sight of social cooperation for mutual advantage? Finally, what ethical relationship does work have with the principles of justice? Following an analytical and hermeneutical approach centred on Rawls's work, we examine in turn the historical and conceptual framework of the question, the place of merit in relation to natural gifts and talents, and the conditions of democratic equality. We argue that Rawls's rejection of distribution according to merit, far from discarding work, re-grounds its value in the difference principle and in the requirement of reciprocity.
